Sterilization Monitoring Unit – Load Control Reusable (SMU-LCR)

Ready-to-use reusable test system for monitoring steam sterilization with fractional vacuum for complex sterilizable items, including hollow body instruments (Critical B).

  • Patented technology for reliable test results
  • No screw closures or dome joints
  • “Tube” interior easy to dry and clean

Description

The SMU-LCR is a novel test system for monitoring sterilization cycles with fractional vacuum at 121°C or 134°C for complex sterilizable items (according to DIN EN 867-5). Our patented reusable system consists of a collapsible plastic body that simulates a long, thin tube, at the end of which is a test chamber containing a chemical indicator.

Other sterilization control systems available on the market for hollow bodies (Helix systems, PCDs) must be assembled from several individual parts. The seals or dome joints of these tests are always weak points, as they can become leaky. Steam can penetrate through these leaks, leading to false positive test results—thus, inadequate sterilization effectiveness may go undetected!

In contrast, the unique design of our SMU-LCR has no dome joints that can become leaky. The control system is ideal for assessing the performance of sterilizers for hollow body instruments and for the release of critical B instruments.

Application

The application of the SMU-LCR is simple and quick:

  1. Open the SMU-LCR and insert an indicator into the test chamber.
  2. Close the test system and secure it with the clip.
  3. Place it in the sterilization chamber and start the sterilization cycle.
  4. After the sterilization cycle is complete, remove the SMU-LCR and allow it to cool briefly.
  5. Open the test system and check the indicator for a color change.

After one cycle, the internal geometry of the “tube” can easily dry in the open position until the SMU-LCR is ready for use again shortly. If any condensate or contaminants have formed, they can be easily removed with compressed air. This presents a significant advantage over conventional tubing systems, as the interior of the tube typically cannot be checked for contaminants and moisture.

Evaluation

Only with a complete color change of the indicator from light blue to black is a successful sterilization achieved. In this case, you can assume that the rest of the load in the sterilizer has also been properly sterilized—especially the inner surfaces of hollow-body instruments. An incomplete color change to dark blue or blue-green indicates a faulty sterilization cycle.

Single-use or Reusable?

The SMU-LCR is the safest reusable system on the market. However, handling errors such as incorrect insertion of the indicator or insufficient fastening of the clip cannot be completely ruled out. For maximum safety and ease of use, we therefore recommend our single-use system, SMU-LC, in which the indicator is already pre-inserted at the factory. You can easily place the single-use test in the sterilizer with the load without any preparation.
